Diagnose Your Problem First

What Is Your RV Water Heater Doing?

RV water heater problems are constantly misdiagnosed. A unit that "won't light" could be a $25 thermocouple or a corroded gas valve — and you won't know which until it's properly tested. The four cards below cover the most common failure patterns and what they actually point to.

We test all of these in-shop, walk you through the findings in plain language, provide a written cost, and wait for your go-ahead before touching anything. Call ahead to schedule your drop-off.

Won't Light — No Hot Water

Likely Cause

We test all of these in-shop, walk you through the findings in plain language, provide a written cost, and wait for your go-ahead before touching anything. Call ahead to schedule your drop-off.

Won't Light — No Hot Water

Likely Cause

Failing gas valve not staying open, corroded anode rod contaminating the tank, or sediment buildup reducing effective capacity. Annual tank flushing prevents most of these failures.

Leaking or Dripping

Likely Cause

T&P (pressure relief) valve leaking is a common, inexpensive fix. A crack or corrosion in the tank body itself is not repairable — that means replacement. Don't ignore tank leaks.

Won't Light — No Hot Water

Likely Cause

Burned-out heating element (common when units run dry), failed thermostat, or tripped circuit breaker. Gas mode may still function while electric fails completely.

Know Your System

DSI, Pilot Light, or Tankless — What Do You Have?

The failure modes, repair costs, and replacement options differ completely depending on which water heater type is in your rig. Most owners don't know which type they have until it stops working.

DSI — Direct Spark Ignition

The industry standard since the early 2000s. Atwood and Suburban DSI units automatically ignite the burner using an electronic spark controller — no manual lighting required. Very reliable, but the igniter board and gas valve are the most common failure points.

BrandsAtwood, Suburban
Tank Size6 or 10 gallon
Top FailuresIgniter, gas valve, ECO
Typical Repair$80–$400

Pilot Light / Manual Ignition

Found on RVs manufactured before roughly 2002. Requires manually lighting the pilot before use. Thermocouple failures are the most common repair — usually straightforward and affordable. Many Class A motorhome owners still run these units.

BrandsAtwood, Mor-Flo
Tank Size6 gallon typical
Top FailuresThermocouple, pilot orifice
Typical Repair$60–$200

Tankless — On-Demand Hot Water

Girard GSWH-2 and Truma AquaGo units heat water instantly on demand with no tank to deplete. Common in higher-end motorhomes. These units have complex electronics and require specific knowledge — not every shop handles them. We do.

BrandsGirard, Truma
CapacityUnlimited (on-demand)
Top FailuresControl board, flow sensor
Typical Repair$150–$600+

Don't know which type you have? Call us at (830) 535-6007 and describe what's happening. With your RV's year, make, and model we can usually identify your water heater type before you make the drive — and have the right parts ready when you arrive.

Honest Guidance

Should You Repair It or Replace It?

We give you a straight answer after diagnosis — not the answer that makes us more money that day. Here is how we think through the decision so you know what to expect before bringing your rig in.

Repair Makes Sense When…

Replacement Makes Sense When…

We won't recommend replacement when a repair will genuinely solve the problem. Since 1993 our customers keep coming back because we give straight advice — not the answer that pads the invoice.

Why RV Owners Drive to Pipe Creek

What Makes This Shop Different

Both Modes Tested

We diagnose both gas burner and 120V electric heating circuits. A full diagnosis covers both operating modes so you don't get a partial fix that fails again on the road.

Tankless Units Serviced

Girard and Truma tankless water heaters require different tools and different knowledge than tank units. We work on both. Many general shops won't touch them.

Written Estimate — Every Job

We diagnose completely, give you a written cost breakdown, and wait for your approval. No work starts without it. This is our standard process on every single repair.

RV-Only Shop

No cars, no trucks, no general mechanical work. RVs exclusively. Every technician and every tool focused entirely on one vehicle type. That focus matters when diagnosing RV systems.

Anode Rod & Maintenance

We don't just fix the immediate failure. We check anode rod condition, flush the tank, and give you an honest report. Prevention costs far less than replacement.

Family-Owned Since 1993

Over 30 years serving Texas RV owners. Many customers have trusted us with multiple rigs across multiple years. We treat every rig like it's our own.

What RV Owners Say About Our Work

Gary & Pam T.

"Dometic 8500 fabric was shredded after a wind storm near Bandera. Called Monday, dropped off Tuesday, picked up Thursday with a brand new re-wrap. Arms were in good shape so they just did the fabric. Saved us a lot of money vs. replacing the whole unit."

WL

"Electric Carefree awning wouldn't retract — button did nothing. Two shops told me I needed a full replacement. Class A diagnosed it as a bad motor capacitor. $140 repair, in and out same day. Still working fine six weeks later."

RV

Ron & Linda V.

"Got a written estimate before any work started — appreciated that. One arm was bent from a low-clearance situation. They straightened it, re-tensioned the spring, and it works like new. Fair price and totally honest shop."

MS

Mark & Donna S.

"Lippert Solera power awning wasn't extending all the way. They found a stripped gear in the motor assembly. Ordered the part, repaired in 2 days. These guys clearly know RV systems — they weren't guessing at all."

AB

Alan B.

"Water was pooling in the center of the awning every time it rained. Classic torsion spring issue. They adjusted the pitch and replaced the spring. Fixed permanently. Wish I'd brought it in two years ago — that pooling was stressing the arm bracket."

CM

Cindy & Dave M.

"Full replacement on a 2009 Class A with original Dometic awning — roller was bent and both arms were compromised. They sourced a matching replacement, installed, and tested it fully. Honest about why repair didn't make sense. Five stars all the way."

Who Is Working on Your RV

Three Decades of RV-Only Expertise

Class A RV Repairs has worked exclusively on RVs since 1993. Every technician, every tool, and every stocked part is oriented toward one type of vehicle. That's not a marketing line — it's how we built our business.

Water heater diagnosis is a specialty within a specialty. The difference between a $60 thermocouple repair and an $800 tank replacement comes down to knowing exactly what to test — not just replacing parts until something works. Thirty years in one niche delivers that.

Started as a mobile service operation. Built early reputation diagnosing problems other shops missed — in driveways and campgrounds across the Texas Hill Country.

Common Questions

RV Water Heater Repair — Frequently Asked Questions

The most common causes are a failed DSI igniter circuit, a tripped ECO (high-limit reset) button on the back of the unit, a faulty thermocouple on pilot-style units, or a burned-out heating element in electric mode. Check the ECO button first — it's a free fix if that's the issue. If not, bring it in for a proper in-shop diagnosis and written estimate.
A properly maintained RV water heater typically lasts 10–15 years. The single biggest factor is annual anode rod replacement and tank flushing. Tanks that skip this maintenance often fail in 5–7 years from internal corrosion. The anode rod is a sacrificial component designed to corrode so the steel tank doesn't.
The ECO (Energy Cut-Off) is a high-limit safety device. If water temperature exceeds a safe threshold, the ECO trips and shuts off the burner. It resets by pressing the small red button on the back of the unit inside the exterior access panel. If it keeps tripping, there's an underlying cause — usually a stuck-open gas valve or failed thermostat — that needs proper diagnosis.
Yes. Atwood and Suburban are the two most common brands in RVs and we stock common parts for both. Atwood was acquired by Dometic but legacy and current Dometic/Atwood models are both fully supported. Suburban units of all generations are serviced. We also work on Girard tankless and Truma AquaGo systems.
Yes — every 12 months or at minimum every other season. The anode rod is a magnesium or aluminum rod that corrodes preferentially over the steel tank. When it's depleted, the tank starts to corrode internally. Replacing it is quick and inexpensive — skipping it is the most common reason RV water heaters fail early. We check it whenever you bring your rig in.
Repair is the right call when the tank body is sound and the failure is in a replaceable component — igniter, thermocouple, gas valve, heating element, or T&P valve. Replacement makes sense when the tank is corroded or leaking from the tank body, when the unit is over 10 years old without maintenance, or when repair cost exceeds 50% of a new installed unit. We give you a straight recommendation after diagnosis with no upselling.
Gas and electric circuits are completely independent on dual-mode units. A failed electric mode typically means a burned-out 120V heating element (especially common on units run without water), a tripped breaker in the RV's panel, or a failed thermostat on the electric side. Check the breaker first. If it keeps tripping, that points to the heating element drawing too much current and needing replacement.

Yes. If your rig has a tank-style Atwood or Suburban and you want to upgrade to a Girard or Truma tankless unit, we can evaluate whether your RV's propane system and plumbing supports the conversion and provide an installation estimate. Tankless units deliver unlimited hot water and are popular on larger Class A motorhomes.

The sulfur smell is almost always caused by a depleted anode rod reacting with bacteria in standing tank water — especially common when an RV has been stored with water in the tank. The fix is flushing the tank, treating with hydrogen peroxide, and replacing the anode rod. In some cases switching to an aluminum/zinc rod helps. It's a maintenance issue, not a defect in the unit.
Yes — always call ahead so we can schedule your drop-off, note your unit brand and model, and have the right parts on hand when you arrive. This significantly speeds up your turnaround. Call (830) 535-6007 to set up your drop-off time. We're open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
