What Does RV Water Damage Actually Look Like?

Water damage rarely announces itself. By the time you notice something is wrong, moisture has often been working through walls, floors, and framing for months. These are the four warning signs we see most often.

Soft or Spongy Floors

When you step and feel the floor flex or give underfoot, the subfloor substrate has absorbed moisture and begun to delaminate or rot. This is one of the most common — and most costly — forms of RV water damage if left unaddressed.

Bubbling or Delaminating Exterior Panels

Fiberglass sidewalls are bonded to a foam core. When water infiltrates the bond line — usually through failing seals or roof seams — air pockets form and the skin begins to separate. You'll see bubbles, ripples, or waviness across the panel surface.

Interior Staining or Discoloration

Brown or yellowish stains on interior walls, ceilings, or around window frames are a clear indication that water has been tracking down through the structure. Staining near slide-outs or roof vents is especially common.

Musty Odor or Visible Mold

A persistent musty smell — even with windows open and the rig well-ventilated — means mold or mildew has established itself inside walls or under flooring. Visible mold patches on walls or ceiling panels confirm active moisture intrusion.

How We Diagnose and Repair RV Water Damage

A four-stage process built around finding every affected area — not just the visible damage — so repairs hold for the long term.

01

Diagnose the Source

We use moisture meters and thermal inspection to locate every entry point and map where water has traveled — not just the obvious spot.

02

Map the Damage

We document all affected areas with photos and a written damage report used for your estimate and for insurance documentation if needed.

03

Remove & Dry

Damaged substrate, flooring, and wall materials are removed. We dry the cavity completely before any new materials go in — no shortcuts.

04

Rebuild & Seal

Structural framing, substrate, and exterior panels are rebuilt to spec. We reseal all penetrations, seams, and slide-out perimeters with lifetime-grade sealant.

How Much Does RV Water Damage Repair Cost?

Cost depends almost entirely on how far the damage has spread. A leak caught at month one is a very different job than the same leak caught at year three. These are typical ranges we see at our shop.

Minor Roof Leak Repair

$300 – $800

Small puncture or failed seam caught early. Patch or re-seal the entry point, dry the area, repair any minor substrate damage. Typically 1–2 days in the shop.

Delamination Re-bonding

$800 – $3,000

Fiberglass sidewall has separated from the foam core. We inject adhesive, clamp the panel, and re-bond affected sections. Cost scales with the size of the delaminated area.

Subfloor Rot & Replacement

$2,000 – $6,000

Rotted or delaminated subfloor requires full material removal and replacement. Includes structural drying, new substrate, and finish flooring reinstallation.

Full Structural Water Damage

$5,000 – $15,000+

Extensive frame rot, full-length delamination, or combined floor-and-wall damage. These are major rebuilds but often cost far less than replacing the rig.

Can Water-Damaged RV Walls Be Saved?

In most cases, yes — if the damage is caught before moisture has rotted through the structural framing. RV walls are built in layers: exterior fiberglass or aluminum skin, a foam or wood-composite core, interior substrate, and finish paneling. Water infiltrates through failed seals, roof seams, or slide-out perimeters and works inward over time.

When we assess a water-damaged wall, we're looking at two things: whether the structural wood framing has rotted through, and whether the exterior skin can be re-bonded or needs to be replaced. If the framing is sound, the repair is straightforward.

Steps we take on a water-damaged RV wall:

What makes repair possible vs. replacement necessary: If the aluminum or steel structural studs have corroded through, or if the damage covers more than 60–70% of a wall section, full panel replacement is typically more cost-effective than attempting a repair. We'll tell you honestly which situation you're in — before you commit to anything.

Can delaminated RV walls be fully restored?Yes — in most cases. If the structural framing beneath the substrate is still sound, we can remove the damaged core material, replace the substrate, re-bond the skin, and finish to match. The result is a wall that is as strong as the original factory construction.

Our Water Damage Repair Process — Start to Finish

Every water damage repair follows the same five-step process. No skipped steps, no shortcuts, and you always know exactly where your RV stands.

01

Initial Inspection & Moisture Mapping

Technicians use calibrated moisture meters and visual inspection to identify every wet area — not just where you saw the stain.

02

Written Damage Assessment

A full written estimate covering all materials, labor, and timeline. You approve everything before we touch a tool.

03

Controlled Drying & Material Removal

Damaged materials come out. The cavity is dried completely before anything goes back in — preventing mold from returning.

04

Substrate & Structure Rebuilt

New framing, substrate, and structural components installed to factory specifications. No compromises on the bones of your coach.

05

Exterior Sealed & Refinished

All seams, penetrations, and panel edges are resealed. The exterior is color-matched and refinished to blend with original paint.

"Found a soft spot in our living room floor after a season of use. Class A tracked the leak all the way back to a failed roof vent seal we never would have found ourselves. Fixed it right, fixed the subfloor, and gave us a written warranty. Couldn't ask for more."

WL

"Our insurance adjuster was making it complicated. Class A handled the whole thing — photos, documentation, direct communication. Got our approval and did outstanding work on the sidewall delamination. These guys know what they're doing."

RV

Tom H.

"Took it in thinking it was a small roof leak. Turned out water had been getting behind the shower wall for a while. They showed me exactly what was going on, gave me a fair estimate, and had it done in under two weeks. Top-shelf shop."

MS

Mark & Donna S.

"Lippert Solera power awning wasn't extending all the way. They found a stripped gear in the motor assembly. Ordered the part, repaired in 2 days. These guys clearly know RV systems — they weren't guessing at all."

AB

Alan B.

"Water was pooling in the center of the awning every time it rained. Classic torsion spring issue. They adjusted the pitch and replaced the spring. Fixed permanently. Wish I'd brought it in two years ago — that pooling was stressing the arm bracket."

CM

Cindy & Dave M.

"Full replacement on a 2009 Class A with original Dometic awning — roller was bent and both arms were compromised. They sourced a matching replacement, installed, and tested it fully. Honest about why repair didn't make sense. Five stars all the way."
