Identify Your Problem

What Happened to Your RV Awning?

Awning problems fall into four categories. Knowing which one you're dealing with determines whether you need a simple repair, a fabric replacement, or a full new awning. We assess in-shop and tell you honestly which path makes sense.

Torn, Ripped, or Mildewed Fabric

The most common awning issue. Small tears under 6 inches can often be patched. Large tears, widespread mildew that won't clean, UV-chalked fabric that tears easily, or fabric that has lost its waterproof coating all point to full fabric replacement. A re-wrap keeps your existing hardware — it's significantly cheaper than replacing the whole awning.
Often: Fabric Replacement Only

Electric Awning Won't Extend or Retract

On motorized awnings, a failed motor is the most common cause — but it's often a bad motor capacitor, not the motor itself, which costs far less to replace. A jammed arm, a stripped gear, or a control board fault can also prevent movement. We diagnose the electrical and mechanical systems before ordering any parts.
Often: Motor or Capacitor Repair

Bent, Broken, or Loose Arm

Wind damage and accidental drive-aways are the two most common causes of bent awning arms. A single bent arm can sometimes be straightened and re-tensioned. Arms that are cracked, have a broken weld, or have compromised the mounting bracket usually require arm replacement. We stock arms for the most common brands.
Often: Arm Repair or Replacement

Sagging, Poor Tension, or Water Pooling

If water pools in the middle of your awning instead of shedding to the sides, the torsion spring has lost tension, the roller has a slight bend, or the arm pitch has shifted. Left unaddressed, pooling water can collapse the arm assembly. Torsion spring adjustment or replacement restores proper pitch and fabric tension.
Often: Torsion Spring & Pitch Adjustment

Not sure which category you're in? Describe what happened and we can often narrow it down before your drop-off — so we have the right parts ready when you arrive.

Know Your Awning System

Manual, Electric, or Full Cassette — What Type Do You Have?

The repair approach, parts availability, and cost range differ significantly between awning types. Knowing which system is on your rig helps us prepare before you arrive.

Torn, Ripped, or Mildewed Fabric

The standard awning on the majority of Class A, B, and C motorhomes. Extended and retracted by hand crank or pull strap. Torsion spring handles the return tension. Simple mechanics means most repairs are straightforward and parts are widely available. Brands include Dometic 8500, Carefree Latitude, and Lippert manual series.

BrandsDometic, Carefree, Lippert
OperationHand crank / pull strap
Top IssuesFabric, torsion spring, arm
Typical Repair$150–$700

Electric / Power Awning

One-touch button operation via a 12V motor. Common on newer and higher-trim motorhomes. Adds convenience but introduces motor, capacitor, and control board as additional failure points. Many electric awnings include wind sensors and auto-retract. Dometic 9100, Carefree Ascent, Lippert Solera Power, and Girard are the most common.

BrandsDometic, Carefree, Solera, Girard
Operation12V motor & switch
Top IssuesMotor, capacitor, control board
Typical Repair$200–$550

Full Cassette Awning

The awning fabric, arms, and roller are all enclosed in a protective cassette housing when retracted. Found on higher-end Class A motorhomes and many European-style RVs. More complex hardware and higher parts cost, but the fabric stays protected from UV and debris when stored. Fiamma F65 and some Dometic SL models use this system.

BrandsFiamma, Dometic SL
OperationManual or electric motor
Top IssuesCassette housing, fabric, motor
Typical Repair$300–$900+

Don't know which type you have? Look at where the fabric stores when retracted. If it rolls onto a tube mounted on the side of the RV — that's a standard arm awning. If the fabric disappears into an enclosed box housing — that's a cassette. If it's button-operated, it's electric. Call us at (830) 535-6007 and describe it — we'll identify it immediately.

Full Awning Replacement When…

We inspect hardware condition before recommending anything. Selling a $500 fabric replacement on arms that are about to fail puts you back in the shop in 6 months. We only recommend what actually solves the problem long-term.

Why RV Owners Choose Class A RV Repairs

What Makes This Shop Different

Fabric & Hardware Both Assessed

We don't just look at the torn part — we inspect the entire awning system. A re-wrap on failing arms is a waste of money. We tell you the full picture before you decide.

Electric Awning Expertise

Power awning diagnosis requires testing 12V circuits, motor function, capacitors, and control electronics. This is not something most general shops are equipped for. We handle all of it in-shop.

Written Estimate — Every Job

Every repair, every time — you receive a written cost breakdown before we order a single part or touch a single bolt. No exceptions, no surprises.

RV-Only Specialist Shop

Not a general repair shop that takes occasional RV work. RVs are all we do, every day. That means faster diagnosis, better parts availability, and a shop set up for full-size motorhomes.

Texas Climate Experience

Over 30 years maintaining RV awnings in Texas heat and UV conditions. We know which fabrics hold up, which brands fail early in this climate, and what preventive maintenance actually extends awning life.

Family-Owned Since 1993

Three decades of serving Texas RV owners. Many customers return with multiple rigs over the years because honest work and fair pricing keep them coming back. That doesn't happen without consistent quality.

Dometic 8500 fabric was shredded after a wind storm near Bandera. Called Monday, dropped off Tuesday, picked up Thursday with a brand new re-wrap. Arms were in good shape so they just did the fabric. Saved us a lot of money vs. replacing the whole unit.

Electric Carefree awning wouldn't retract — button did nothing. Two shops told me I needed a full replacement. Class A diagnosed it as a bad motor capacitor. $140 repair, in and out same day. Still working fine six weeks later.

Got a written estimate before any work started — appreciated that. One arm was bent from a low-clearance situation. They straightened it, re-tensioned the spring, and it works like new. Fair price and totally honest shop.

Lippert Solera power awning wasn't extending all the way. They found a stripped gear in the motor assembly. Ordered the part, repaired in 2 days. These guys clearly know RV systems — they weren't guessing at all.

Water was pooling in the center of the awning every time it rained. Classic torsion spring issue. They adjusted the pitch and replaced the spring. Fixed permanently. Wish I'd brought it in two years ago — that pooling was stressing the arm bracket.

Full replacement on a 2009 Class A with original Dometic awning — roller was bent and both arms were compromised. They sourced a matching replacement, installed, and tested it fully. Honest about why repair didn't make sense. Five stars all the way.

Experience Behind Every Repair

Thirty Years. One Type of Vehicle.

Class A RV Repairs has worked on RVs and only RVs since 1993. That single-focus discipline is what separates us from a general shop that occasionally handles RV work — every technician, every tool, and every stocked part is oriented around one vehicle type.

Awning work requires knowing the specific failure patterns of each brand and generation. A Dometic 8500 arm fails differently than a Carefree Latitude. A Girard power system has different diagnostic steps than a Lippert Solera. Three decades of working on these systems means we've seen every failure mode across every major brand.

1993 — Mobile RV Repair, Central Texas

Started as a mobile service operation across Central Texas. Built early reputation on accuracy — diagnosing root causes, not just replacing visible components.

2003 — Permanent Shop Opens in Pipe Creek

Established our permanent facility on Highway 16 in Pipe Creek, TX. Purpose-built for full-size motorhomes — correct bay height, proper workspace, organized parts for every major brand.

Today — Full-Service, Still Family-Owned

Expanded to include body repair and paint capabilities. Same family ownership. Same core commitment to honest diagnosis, written estimates, and repairs that actually hold up on the road.

"We've repaired and replaced awnings on just about every Class A motorhome manufactured in the last 30 years. That library of experience means we don't guess — we know what's wrong and exactly how to fix it."

Common Questions

RV Awning Repair — Frequently Asked Questions

Small tears under 6 inches can be patched with awning repair tape or a professional patch, which holds in light conditions. Large tears, spreading mildew that has penetrated the fabric, UV degradation (chalking, brittleness), or fabric that has lost its waterproof coating all point to a full fabric replacement. We assess the damage and tell you honestly which approach is worth doing.
Fabric replacement only (re-wrap on existing hardware): $300–$700 depending on awning size and brand. Motor or capacitor replacement on electric awnings: $150–$450. Arm repair or replacement: $150–$400 per arm. Torsion spring adjustment or replacement: $100–$250. Full awning replacement installed: $800–$2,000+. We provide a written estimate after in-shop inspection — before any work or parts ordering.
On electric awnings, "button does nothing" most commonly points to a failed motor capacitor (a cheap fix), a tripped motor thermal switch, a dead motor, or a control board fault. It can also be a blown fuse in the 12V circuit or a disconnected wire. We run through the full electrical and mechanical diagnostic before recommending parts — the cheap fix is always worth checking first.
Yes. Dometic (formerly A&E) and Carefree of Colorado are the two most common brands on Class A motorhomes and we work on both regularly. We stock common replacement fabrics, arms, springs, and motor components for both brands. Lippert/Solera, Girard, and Fiamma are also serviced.
Quality acrylic fabric (Sunbrella and similar) lasts 8–12 years with proper care — cleaning mildew promptly, not leaving it extended in high winds, and treating with fabric protector every few years. Vinyl fabric lasts 5–8 years. Texas UV and heat accelerate degradation significantly compared to northern climates. Signs of end-of-life include persistent chalking, fabric that tears at stress points, and waterproofing that has failed.
Pooling water means the awning has lost the proper downward pitch from the coach wall to the outer edge. The most common cause is a weakened torsion spring that no longer holds the arm at the correct angle, or an arm that has been bumped and shifted pitch. Pooled water is heavy — even a small amount creates significant stress on the arm bracket. Get it adjusted before it causes structural damage.
It depends on what's failing. If the arms, roller, and hardware are solid and only the fabric is worn, a re-wrap is almost always worth it — you get a new-looking awning at a fraction of replacement cost. If the arms are corroded, the roller is bent, or the mounting brackets have deteriorated, replacement makes more sense. We give you a full hardware assessment so you can decide with accurate information.
Yes — with some constraints. The mounting hole pattern and coach wall attachment points need to match or be compatible with the new awning. We can evaluate fitment during our inspection. Many owners use a replacement as an opportunity to upgrade from manual to electric, or to source a higher-quality replacement fabric than the original. We source awnings from multiple suppliers to find the best fit for your specific rig.
On manual awnings, the rafter lock or arm tension knob is usually the issue — either the locking mechanism is worn, the arm pivot has loosened, or the torsion spring has weakened and no longer maintains enough outward pressure to hold position. On electric awnings, a failing motor brake can cause creeping retraction. Both are diagnosable in-shop and typically straightforward repairs.
Yes — always call ahead so we can schedule your drop-off, assess the fabric size and brand, and source materials in advance. Awning fabric is not a same-day stocked item for every size and brand — calling ahead can cut your total turnaround time significantly. Call us at (830) 535-6007 Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
